The village of Gamsutl, an abandoned town in Russia's Dagestan
DAGESTAN, RUSSIA - JULY 18: A view of the Gamsutl village, Russia's third oldest settlement, meaning "at the foot of the Khan's tower" an abandoned town in Dagestan, Gunibsky district of Russia on July 18, 2022. There are houses and streets near the village, where it is believed that the conqueror khan lived at the top and his army stood at the bottom. Now, due to the complete absence of population, Gamsutl is called nothing more than a "ghost village", but it still remains one of the most famous tourist attractions in the republic. Based on information from Iranian archives, scientists believe the village arose at the same time as Derbent, the oldest city in Dagestan. The history of the village began at the foot of the Khan's castle about 6 thousand years ago, and the last inhabitant of the village passed away in 2015. Presumably founded by the Avar conquerors, the village was never conquered by any army in the world, thanks to its location and the skill of the military leaders.
