ITALY: Wildfires ravage southern Sicily, threatening homes
SICILY, ITALY - SEPTEMBER 22, 2023: Forest fires that ignited on Thursday evening (Sept. 21) in Italy’s southern island of Sicily and continued throughout the night, have reportedly threatened residential areas in some parts of the region.According to Italy's ANSA Agency, a fire that originated in a scrubland area within Palermo city's Brancaccio district has triggered concerns, forcing some residents to evacuate their homes.Efforts to extinguish the fires are currently underway, with a particular focus on municipalities within the Palermo province, including Altofonte, Gratteri, Gibilrossa, Misilmeri, Piana degli Albanesi, Torretta, and Prizzi.Due to the fires in Gratteri, primary and middle schools have temporarily suspended classes.The firefighting operations have been conducted with the support of ground and aerial firefighting aircraft as well as volunteers.Italy's Civil Protection Agency has issued a 'red alert' for areas including Messina in the east, Palermo in the north, and Trapani in the west of the island due to the wildfires in Sicily.This year in Sicily, wildfires in scrubland areas during July and August have impacted various regions, resulting in damage to residential areas.
