Gaza residents question ceasefire as Israeli strikes kill people in Nuseirat camp
GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JAN. 16: Palestinians inspected the wreckage of the al-Khatib family home in Nuseirat refugee camp on Friday, Jan. 16.Medical sources reported that three Palestinians were killed and others sustained varying injuries after an Israeli drone strike hit a home belonging to the family in Al-Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.Footage from the scene showed extensive destruction to the residence and surrounding structures, with debris scattered throughout the area as local residents gathered to survey the damage amid scenes of grief and anger.Neighbors expressed doubt that conditions on the ground reflect the ceasefire agreement currently in place, saying they continue to experience the full brutality of war as attacks persist and humanitarian conditions deteriorate.'We were sitting during the prayer and the calm, intending to pray. After a short while, a man came out limping on his leg. Then, shortly after, another strike happened while we were still sitting there,' local resident Tariq al-Malakh told Anadolu Agency.US envoy Steve Witkoff announced Wednesday that the second phase of a ceasefire agreement had begun as part of Trump’s 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza.'Everyone was where they were, not knowing where to go or which area to head to. Because even today, when civilians are being struck in the same house—most of them small children—pulled out from under the rubble, this is neither a second phase nor a first phase of calm. It is destruction,' he said.Fighting back tears, al-Malakh added: 'This is total destruction. Every tear shames us—by God, it shames us—everything that has happened to us. All the children have lost their mother and their brothers; they have suffered more than I have.'Abu Yusuf Mazhar, a neighbor living in nearby tents, recounted the moment of the attack.'Two rockets were fired and people were martyred there. Children were wounded,' Mazhar said.'They talk about phases—first phase, second phase—but the war is continuing as it is. We do not feel any phases or pauses; the war has not stopped. The war is continuing as it is, and the destruction is clear, as you can see,' he added.Mazhar called on the international community to change its position and act with fairness. 'It should not be biased toward one side. We are civilians, unarmed, isolated in this place. If I had been in the tent, I would have been martyred as well—if I had been there.'According to Gaza's Health Ministry, Israeli forces have killed approximately 451 Palestinians and wounded 1,251 others since Oct. 11, in what Palestinian officials describe as violations of the ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire ended a conflict that began on Oct. 8, 2023, which Palestinians characterize as a genocidal campaign. The war resulted in more than 71,000 Palestinian deaths and over 171,000 injuries, according to local health authorities, while causing widespread destruction to an estimated 90% of civilian infrastructure.Writing by Sibel Uygun
